Oiled Wood Flooring - A Guide

Oiled Wood Flooring

When choosing wood flooring, regardless of species of brand, those who desire the most natural look will always be drawn to boards with an oiled finish. Whether you live in a grand, 18th century manor house, or a chique, modern city apartment; a quality, oiled wooden floor will add class and elegance to any space.

About Wood Floor Oil

The basic principle of a specialised wood flooring oil is to convey the impression of freshly sawn wood, still in its natural state. To achieve this, most manufacturers try to use the most natural products and ingredients when producing their oils. Any quality oil or oiled wood flooring will use non-toxic chemicals that will be safe in any environment, a common concern for those with small pets and young children.

Cleaning Oiled Wood Floors

Protecting your oiled floors is a simple task. Through routine cleaning, you will remove any dust or dirt before they have the chance to scratch and dull the surface, or wear away any of the floor. Always keep water to a minimum when cleaning your oiled wood floors. If you spill anything, particularly food or drink, wipe up immediately to prevent any permanent damage or staining. Sweep or vacuum your oiled floors as often as needed. A multitude of cleaning accessories are available to assist with this task. Finally, never use ‘all-purpose’ cleaner on your oiled floors as they tend to leave a dull residue and usually require too much water to properly function.

Maintenance of Oiled Wood Flooring

Before finalising your flooring decision, it is important to bear in mind that an oiled floor should be taken on as a labour of love. To keep the flooring in its best possible condition, yearly restoration should be undertaken. Whilst this may sound daunting to begin with, in actuality it rarely ever amounts to more than applying a fresh coat of oil to both restore the protection, and to refresh and bring out the natural colour of the timber. If you have laid an oiled floor in an area where there is a high risk of spilling water, like in a kitchen, apply an oil refresher to add a layer of protection and increase the life of your new floor.
