Kahrs or Boen Engineered Wood Flooring, Which to choose?.

heading_title

When customers arrive in our showroom or call our Helpline, They often ask which manufacturer and type of flooring will best suit their requirements. In starting to select we would normally consider the following factors....

Which Manufacturer? Boen or Kahrs?

The quality manufacture and advanced technology offered by trusted brands such as Kahrs and Boen  and the various other brands offered within this site, offer peace of mind as do their associated Warranties. Their respective locking systems offer ease of installation and a high quality of finish.

How do you choose between them? In short we would encourage our customers to select the product that best suits their personal requirements and they can do so with the confidence that both brands will offer excellent standards of production and aftercare.

All of our products have been selected with Quality in mind. You can purchase all of our products with confidence.

We have compiled some hints and tips to assist you in selecting our new floor.

1) The dimensions of the rooms and overall size of the area:

This will give a good indication as to the best suited floor in terms of face width and board length, for example a smaller narrower board will always work better in areas such as Hallways, or small to medium size spaces, where often a wider board would look out of place, Wider Boards with long lengths will enhance the appearance and give a greater feel of space to larger 'Open Plan' type areas.

Always check the dimensions of the board you are purchasing! As DIY type suppliers will often supply poor quality floors with short un-usable lengths, resulting in increased installation costs and a poor quality finish.

2) The type of sub floor construction.

Where mixed sub-floors are present, for example part Timber and part Concrete. A floating type installation using a 14mm or 15mm engineered floor over a good quality underlay with a built in vapour barrier (such as our Elka QT) would be a great choice.

Where structural qualities are needed for example nailing over joists or battens, A 18-22mm engineered floor will be required (such as our OFD Oak Carolina or Oak Claremont, or any of our Solid Oak Products)

3) Colour and appearance

Natural Oak is timeless and will always be the desired floor of choice for many reasons, Oak will not date, will blend well and not clash with other woods and will not offend potential future buyers (if you are planning on moving). It is also durable and hard wearing.  Current poplar choices include the stunning graining patterns and smooth warm chocolate brown tones of a Walnut floor. (see Kahrs Walnut Atlanta)

Other finishes include Whitewash type effects Stained Oaks and Fumed or Smoked Type Boards. Consider that some of these finishes are only applied to the surface of the board and in the long term re-finishing may be an issue.

4) Surface Finish

The look and feel of a natural oiled floor is hard to beat, But periodic maintenance will be required , how often will depend on several factors, including usage and exposure to cleaning and uv light. An application of a refresher or maintenance oil is an easy task and this should not discourage you from purchasing an oiled product.  (A popular choice would be our Kahrs Oak Jersey, Kahrs Oak Hampshire Oiled, or Our OFD Oak Carolina)

However if you are after the easy life opt for a lacquered floor as the after care will be less time consuming,

A good compromise and a popular choice is a Matt Lacquered Floor which will offer the look of an oiled product with the ease of maintaining a lacquered floor. (A popular choice would be our Boen Oak Animoso Matt Lacquered 209mm or 138mm)

5) To Bevel or not to Bevel?

This really is down to personal preference the Bevelled edge detail on a floor can be an attractive feature.  Some are concerned that the Bevel may create a dust trap but we would not be put off by this if its the look you are after.

6) Grading

Always discuss your requirements and your desired look with us, and we can direct you to the products best suited to your specific needs. For example if you require a floor with a clean knot free look a prime board such as our Kahrs Oak Milano would suit you best.

Or if you are after the Country Cottage look our Kahrs Oak jersey would be a great choice.

Please also refer to our grading chart in our ‘Help Me’ section.

7) Price

We are always conscious that a new Engineered or Solid wood floor will represent a significant investment for you the buyer, but a carefully selected product will repay you with years of pleasure.

Even if you are not planning on staying in the property forever, potential buyers are now well educated in high quality finishes and will identify a quality wooden floor straight away.
