Measuring for your Wood Floor & Luxury Vinyl Tile

Measuring Guide for Wood Flooring, Karndean Flooring & Luxury Vinyl Tiles

Welcome to Oak Flooring Direct Limited, your premier destination for high-quality wood flooring, luxury vinyl tiles, and Karndean flooring. To ensure a seamless installation process, it's crucial to measure your space accurately. Follow our comprehensive guide below, complete with diagrams, to measure your areas for wood flooring, luxury vinyl tiles, and Karndean flooring.

1. Gather Your Tools

Before you begin measuring, gather the following tools:

  • Tape measure
  • Pen and paper
  • Calculator (optional)

2. Measure the Room

Start by measuring the length and width of the room where you plan to install the flooring. Use a tape measure and record the measurements in either feet or meters. For irregularly shaped rooms, divide them into smaller, more manageable sections for accuracy.

3. Calculate the Area

To find the area of each section, multiply the length by the width. For example:

Area = Length x Width

Example Length 4m x Width 5m = 20m2

4. Consider Extra for Wastage

It's advisable to add around 5-10% extra to your total area measurement to account for wastage, cutting, and mistakes during installation. This additional amount ensures you have enough material to complete the project without interruptions.

As a general rule we normally allow 5% waste for straight forwards areas and 10% for complex or Herringbone type areas, our team of expert advisors are on hand to help you with this process if required.

5. Account for Doorways and Obstacles

Don't forget to measure any doorways or areas around obstacles, such as cabinets or islands, where flooring will not be installed. Subtract these areas from your total square footage to determine the exact amount of flooring needed.

6. Diagrams for Clarity

Below are diagrams illustrating how to measure standard and irregularly shaped rooms for wood flooring, luxury vinyl tiles, and Karndean flooring:

Standard Room Measurement:

  • Measure the length (L) and width (W) of the room.
  • Calculate the area (A) by multiplying the length by the width (A = L x W).

Irregular Room Measurement:

  • Divide the room into smaller, more manageable sections.
  • Measure each section separately and calculate the area of each.
  • Add the areas of all sections together to find the total area.

Square or rectangular areas

1) Measure the distances at Point A & B

2) Multiply the two distances together, for example, “A” 3.00m by “B”4.00m would equal a total of 12.00 m2

3) Add wastage factor as required (typically 5%)

Irregular Shaped Areas

1) Measure the distances at Points A & B

2) Multiply the two distances together

3) For example “A” 3.00m multiplied by “B”4.00m would equal a total of 12.00 m2

4) Repeat the operation for distances C & D and E & F

5) Add the 3 totals together

6) Add wastage factor as required (typically 5%
